Few people know that besides .mk there is also .мкд — the national extension written in Cyrillic. Both zones are run by MARnet under the same rules and the same registration form.
When .мкд makes sense
- Brand protection — if your brand reads naturally in Cyrillic
- Local audience and offline advertising — a Cyrillic name on a billboard is easier to remember than a transliteration
- Institutions and Macedonian-language content
Where it breaks (honestly)
- Typing. The user needs a Cyrillic keyboard; on a phone that means switching layouts mid-typing.
- Display in some tools. Cyrillic addresses are technically converted to an ASCII form (punycode, xn--…). Browsers usually show the pretty version, but some tools and mail systems show the long one.
- Email. Not every service accepts Cyrillic addresses. Keep mail on a Latin domain.
- Sharing — some apps do not auto-link Cyrillic addresses.
The practical answer
What most do: .mk is the main domain for the site and mail; .мкд is registered for protection and redirected (301) to the main one.
